The physicality of mindsports through elite bridge players’ sensorial experiences: Presence, confidence and bodies

The classification of mindsports such as the card game bridge within sport and society continues to be keenly debated. concept ‘physicality’ is often cited being a prerequisite for an activity classed ‘sport’, characteristic typically seen lacking in mindsports. However, by drawing upon monist conceptualisations mind, body world intertwined, it possible problematise arguments highlighting interconnected sensations experienced when participating bridge. This article explores notion through phenomenologically-inspired analysis 52 interviews with elite-level players. findings detail importance players placed aspects kinaesthesia, physical presence competitive environment, role other social actors their own understandings competition experience. These sensorial, emotional embodied accounts shed light on negotiations socio-cultural influences involved mindsport, which allude greater degree than has previously been discussed.
